HEAVYWEIGHT SHOCK TESTING

HI-TEST has been approved for MIL-S-901D Heavyweight high impact shock testing by NAVSEA Inst. 9491.1C since March 21, 1996.  Unlike other test facilities, our unrestricted local testing allows HI-TEST to offer you minimized testing costs and fewer delays.  We have the vehicles and components to meet your standard heavyweight test requirements:

  • 3 Floating Shock Platforms (FSP's) for testing capacity of 100,000 + lbs
  • 3 Deck Simulator Fixtures (DSF's) for all deck requirements (8-10 Hz, 12-16 Hz, >25 Hz)
  • 146 Acre Remote Site including 2 Test Basins

When your heavyweight testing requirement is exceptional, HI-TEST offers exclusive answers.

The Intermediate Floating Shock Platform (IFSP)- is the latest addition to our heavyweight inventory.  It has a 20 ft x 40 ft area and offers testing for payloads from 60,000 to 250,000 lbs.  The US Navy has been involved with each phase of HI-TEST's IFSP design and certification.  The IFSP is now certified and available for testing. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE IFSP.

Tandem FSP- When your system has multiple deck requirements, one option is to complete a shock sequence with two FSPs set-up.  This arrangement saves you from having to perform two test sequences.

Dual Deck- When your system has multiple deck requirements with smaller components, one option is to complete testing with one FSP outfitted with two decks tuned to the appropriate frequencies.

The Large Displacement Shock Simulator (LDSS) is HI-TEST's invention for use in testing COTS assemblies.  This shock machine has been used to test prototypes for R&D efforts prior to heavyweight shock (see article in VMEbus Systems, 10-03 Issue).  The LDSS also has the potential to be used where obsolescence dictates the need for extension testing.  In this instance shock inputs from original shock testing are replicated and forced on the COTS replacement assembly.

Heavyweight Shock Test Criteria per MIL-S-901D (NAVY) Section 3.1.2(c)

  • Maximum suggested load limit for a 16 x 28 FSP is 60,000 lbs. **HI-TEST has modified its FSPs to accommodate payloads of up to 120,000 lbs with approval
  • Practical size limitations shall not be exceeded.
  • Combined weight and center of gravity limitations should not be exceeded. **Check with testing facility. Outriggers are used to stabilize the FSP payloads with high C.G.

Deck mounted items that are resiliently mounted are usually subjected to heavyweight shock testing using fixtures to simulate low frequency decks. Typically 12-16 Hz for resiliently mounted items and 25 Hz (minimum) for hard mounted items.
